Spotlight on Latinx Higher Education Trends

Commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month

The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center’s Current Term Enrollment Estimates report revealed a significant milestone in Latinx education – more than 2.6 million Latinx students had enrolled in an undergraduate program in fall 2022. Notably, freshman enrollment among Latinx students increased by an impressive 7.9% compared to the previous fall semester. Moreover, the Spring 2023 Stay Informed report unveiled a distinctive trend: Latinx students emerged as the only major racial and ethnic group with an overall enrollment increase (+0.9%).

As we celebrate the commemorative Hispanic Heritage Month, spanning from September 15 to October 15, the Clearinghouse takes pride in acknowledging the remarkable strides Latinx students are making in higher education. These accomplishments include increases in total overall enrollment, persistence, and completions.

Our Research Center plays an instrumental role in advancing Latinx higher education by regularly disseminating comprehensive research identifying postsecondary access and success trends through various demographic lenses. Education leaders and policymakers nationwide rely on the insights provided by its publications, including:

“By embracing and supporting the diverse educational journeys of Latinx students, we cultivate a stronger, more innovative, and resilient future for all. Their success is not only a reflection of individual aspirations but a testament to the collective potential we unlock when we invest in education that is equitable and accessible to everyone,” said Dr. Doug Shapiro, VP, Research and Executive Director, National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.
