Learn about SSCR Error Code 79 – Program Begin Date Too Old and how to correct the SSCR error on the Clearinghouse’s secure site.

Welcome to the tutorial on SSCR error code 79. The purpose of this tutorial is to explain what SSCR error code 79 is, what causes it, and how to resolve the error.

Per the NSLDS, error 79 is caused by a Program Begin Date that is too far in the past. There are two main reasons why this error occurs: First, a student separates from a program and later returns to the same program more than 20 years later. Second, when a defaulted program begin date is reported for a student.

For the cases of students who separate from a program and later return to the same program, the NSLDS guide states to use the original program begin date. However, if the original program begin date is more than 20 years in the past it will cause an error code 79. In these cases, the guidance to resolve error code 79 is to update the program begin date to the date that the student returned to the program.

The most common reason why an error code 79 will occur is due to a default program begin date being included for the student on a school enrollment file. This default date is typically 1/1/1900. To resolve the error code 79 in cases where the student has a defaulted program begin date, update the program begin date to the program’s correct, valid begin date. Also be sure to update your school’s SIS with the correct begin date for the program so the data on your next file does not overwrite the correction.
