The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center will release in March the next Stay Informed with the Latest Enrollment Information report, which will provide a first-look at spring enrollments, and the next COVID-19 Transfer, Mobility, and Progress Report.

“In 2021, the Research Center will continue to provide real data, and current and timely analysis of those data so that policymakers and practitioners can work from those reports,” said Doug Shapiro, Executive Director of the Research Center. “We plan to continue the pace of reporting and the range of reporting that we did this past fall.

“We also will continue our monthly reports to provide regular updates on total enrollments of new students, returning students and adults coming out of the workforce, and the transfer behaviors of students. Additionally, we will continue to report on persistence and retention for students already in the higher education system, including students’ ability to stay full time vs. moving to part-time.“

In Fall 2020, overall postsecondary enrollments declined 2.5 percent, nearly twice the rate of enrollment decline reported in fall 2019, according to final fall 2020 enrollment data. The nation’s fall, total unduplicated postsecondary enrollment fell from 17.9 million students in 2019 to 17.5 million students in 2020.

Furthermore, according to December’s COVID-19 Transfer, Mobility, and Progress Report, the general dampening of student mobility is seen in all transfer pathways. Only primarily online institutions, where more than 90% of students enrolled exclusively online before the pandemic, show an increase in returning transfer students this fall.

The COVID-19 Transfer, Mobility, and Progress Report series, with support from Ascendium Education GroupandECMC Foundation, identifies changes in student transfer pathways that are attributable to the pandemic by using historical data as the pre-pandemic baseline and the Clearinghouse’s current enrollment data.

Forthcoming COVID-19 Transfer, Mobility, and Progress Reports:

  • First-Look Spring 2021 Report: March 2021
  • Final Spring 2021 Report: May 2021

“We plan to continue the pace of reporting and the range of reporting that we did this past fall.”
