Adding Students to Your SSCR Roster: Automatically!

by NSC Blog | Oct 22, 2015 | Enrollment Reporting, Financial Aid Services |

Although the Student Status Confirmation Report (SSCR) Roster is used to update and maintain the appropriate student status for loan deferment and servicing, sometimes students are excluded from SSCRs. Unfortunately, students can be negatively affected when they are not accurately reported on the appropriate school SSCR in a timely manner. That’s why the Clearinghouse is hard at work on a solution to enable your students to be automatically added to your SSCRs with NO additional reporting required by your school.

Why It’s Important to Count Every Student

Excluded students risk having their loans put into repayment and/or losing loan interest subsidies. This can lead to an increased number of students requesting the completion of loan deferment forms, creating an additional burden for our schools. In addition to our upcoming enhancement, to reduce the burden on our schools, the Clearinghouse completes loan deferment forms and forwards them to the appropriate servicers. Loan servicers accept and process the enrollment data and deferment forms, which are certified by the Clearinghouse.

The Clearinghouse is hard at work on a solution to enable your students to be automatically added to your SSCRs with NO additional reporting required by your school.

What Federal Regulations Say

A school or its third-party servicer MUST respond with each student included on the SSCR roster. As your third-party servicer, the Clearinghouse does this on your behalf using the most recent student information you sent us through our Enrollment Reporting service. IMPORTANT: There are no federal reporting requirements stating that you must respond with students who are NOT included on the NSLDS-created SSCR Roster.

Why a Student May Be Excluded from Your Roster

There are two primary reasons a student who should appear on your roster may be excluded:

  1. The student, who previously had financial aid, transfers to your institution but does not take out additional aid at your school.
  2. The student has been reported by your school with two consecutive withdrawal or graduated statuses* and, therefore, automatically fallen off your roster. However, the student returns and re-enrolls in a subsequent semester. * Or you’ve reported the student as deceased two consecutive times.

The Clearinghouse Solution: Every Student Counts!

Even though schools are only required to respond with students appearing on the SSCR roster, we are committed to providing a solution to add missing students from participating Clearinghouse schools back on the roster. With our solution, no additional reporting is required by your school. Eliminating the inconvenience experienced by students excluded from the SSCR Roster and our school participants is a top priority for the Clearinghouse. We expect to announce the release of our new automated SSCR roster functionality soon and will share details as they become available.
