Simplifying Loan Deferments for Students
More than
3,300 colleges and universities —
enrolling 92% of US college students — participate in the Clearinghouse's student loan verification service. Each year, we process more than 100 million student lending enrollment verifications, helping to reduce
administrative backlogs and speed deferments for students.
As the agent for participating schools, the Clearinghouse confirms enrollment information for student financial aid recipients. Our
participating schools send us periodic enrollment updates, which we electronically distribute to participating guarantors, lenders and servicers. We also process paper deferment forms sent to the school or students.
Many of the loan servicers that participate in the Clearinghouse also offer paperless deferment, called Paperless Express. You simply call your servicer to request a deferment and your request is matched against Clearinghouse data to verify your in-school status. Check our
list of participating lenders and servicers to see if your lending organization offers paperless deferment.
Your school's participation in the Clearinghouse provides several benefits to its students, including:
- Automatic deferments
- Quicker resolution of paper-based and problem deferments
- Free deferment and student loan tracking
(contact your institution's financial aid department to obtain
information via our LoanLocator service)
- Ability for you to purchase enrollment verification
certificates online to give to student-based service providers (e.g.,
health insurers, credit issuers, travel companies, etc.)
- Fewer disruptions to your deferment status when transferring from one participating school to another
