What Is DegreeVerify?

DegreeVerify is the largest degree verification service in the US, providing instant online verifications of college degrees and attendance and professional certifications claimed by job applicants. It simplifies academic verifications for colleges as well as employers, background screening firms, and others who regularly screen candidates.

Through DegreeVerify, users can instantly confirm the postsecondary degree and/or attendance for former students and graduates of any of its participating institutions. Verifications of professional certifications are also available. DegreeVerify's online access eliminates the complications and delays associated with manually processing requests through individual colleges. Requestors can verify as many degrees as they want from as many institutions as they want in a single session, providing them with the added time-saving convenience of one-stop verifications. Users can purchase verifications online via credit card or by opening a DegreeVerify account.

How does DegreeVerify work?

Schools participating in DegreeVerify provide the Clearinghouse with electronic copies of their historical degree and attendance records, as well as periodic updates. Employers and their agents request academic records via the Clearinghouse Web site, entering personal information about the subject of their search (e.g., subject's name, Social Security number, birth date, etc.). The Clearinghouse uses this information to find the exact subject in question and provide the requestor with an immediate verification of the subject's academic credentials. The self-running DegreeVerify demo on this page will walk you through performing a degree verification.

You can also verify professional certifications as well as degrees and attendance.

What are the different types of verification responses?

  • Successful: DegreeVerify found a match in its database for the degree and/or attendance information you requested. If your request to confirm a professional certification was successful that verification will be instantly displayed (results for certifications are either successful or unable to confirm).

  • Pending: DegreeVerify was not able to instantly verify your degree or attendance request. This could be because the record you requested pre-dates the school's electronic records, the information you entered was incorrect, or the applicant may have falsified his/her credentials. You will be asked to provide additional information (e.g., birth date, year or approximate year of degree, etc.) and your research request will be immediately sent to the school. Schools prioritize verification requests from the Clearinghouse. You will receive an email with the verification results. Average turnaround time is less than 48 hours.

  • Unable to Confirm: Occasionally an educational institution will not verify degree or attendance information even when it has conferred a degree, such as when there is hold on the record. You should ask the individual to contact the educational institution directly to request the necessary verification.

  • No Record Found: The information that you entered did not match any degree or attendance records in our database and the school was unable to locate either a degree or enrollment record for the subject of your verification request. You will be asked to verify the information you entered and resubmit your request. If the subject reaffirms receipt of the academic credential, you can fax a copy of the degree to the Clearinghouse. We will work with the school to determine whether or not the record is genuine.

Can I request a verification of an additional degree on the same subject?

Yes. You can submit a request to verify an additional degree within seven calendar days after your original request was completed by clicking the "Verify Another Degree For This Person" button at the top of the degree verification response page. (You can also access this option through "Transaction/Billing History.") If you received an email verification of your original degree request, you can click a link within the email to submit an additional degree verification request. The additional degree request will be sent electronically to the school for research and you will receive the results via email.

What information is available through Transaction History?

Your Transaction History shows when each request was submitted and completed, and each verification's fee. Total fees are updated in real time, giving you immediate access to current billing information. Information can be sorted by school, subject name, and more. Because each authorized DegreeVerify user has an individual ID and password, it's possible to view all requests made by each user. Additionally, transaction histories, useful for account reconciliation, are available for all prior months.

How do I sign up for DegreeVerify membership?

We encourage organizations that perform frequent degree verifications to become Clearinghouse members by opening a DegreeVerify account. You'll enjoy discounted degree verifications and faster online verifications.
